Hi, I’m dave!
I am an artist, a woodturner, a demonstrator and an instructor of woodturning, currently based in Traverse City. I began turning wood in 2016 as a form of meditation, a form of physical therapy and as an alternative therapy for PTSD (from military service). You’ll find out quickly that I like to talk about woodturning as much as I enjoy engaging in it. The timbers I use when turning are typically rescued, recycled and recovered from logging operations, arborist cuttings and storm damaged trees in and around Traverse City, Michigan. (Sometimes, there's even some old barn wood!)
During my journey, I have found that I really enjoy teaching the craft, because for me, turning brings a quietness to the mind, a 'centered-ness', and a focus that keeps me in the ‘now’, and deepens my feelings of connection, accomplishment and purpose. I believe my enthusiasm helps others get a sense of this, and I wish to inspire these feelings in other folks. It’s a happy place, a safe space, and a smiling face!
I like to share that I’m in my 5th year as a beekeeper. I have been involved with the Heroes To Hives program for 6 years, so I also like to talk about pollinators, and beekeeping as therapy! (If you’re a military veteran, "Thank You" for serving with me. And... I should mention I might talk one of your ears off about it all.)
I also broadcast live on Twitch.tv on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (link below). I invite you to take a look around the store! Are you looking for a quality demonstrator for your club or venue? Please contact me to book it! I accept commissions, contact me to discuss details and terms!
